February was a very busy and eventful month. I made several major announcements, and the month ends with a lot more things on my todo list than were there at the beginning. Some highlights:

  • Announced the Baseball Research Journal Archives.
  • Announced to chapter and committee leaders that group web sites are available in-house now.
  • Installed time-tracking software to analyze how I spend my day
  • Copied the experiemental journal archive site to our server, set it up and made it suitable for public access, then announced it to the membership
  • Recruited members to help proofread the BRJ archives and set up a workspace for them
  • Prepared a plan for a wiki-based encyclopedia, presented it to the board, and they approved it
  • Developed a draft technology plan, also presented to the board
  • Converted the content of two non-SABR sites to run on our server
  • Set up OCR software to experiment with community prooferading in future digitization.

Coming up in March:

  • Beginning the process of developing the encyclopedia (this won't be visible)
  • At least one or two new chapter/committee sites
  • A re-organization of the main SABR website

New site: Baseball Research Journal Archives

Today we announced the launch of the new Baseball Research Journal Archives site. The content in the site came from a Joomla site set up by Becky Bristol last year, and was initiailly scanned in by Eileen Canepari a few years ago. I'm hoping that we can refine this content, getting rid of some OCR errors and add more in 2009.

Wade Boggs, 1988 All-star game

Wade Boggs, 1988 All-star game

I felt that some chapters and committees were likely to want this functionality, so I did a ilttle research today and came up with this. It is very easy to use (you actually don't have to do anything at all - there's nothing easier than that!) and creates very professional thumbnails that expand to nice full-sized images.

It replaces the image you include in the article and automatically creates a small version to display, then shows the full size image when someone clicks.

Here, I've used it to bring you Wade Boggs's first at bat in the 1988 All-Star Game.

January was a good month in my work here at SABR. I got to know the organization in the November and December, and in January started getting some work done. Here are some highlights:

  • Put the final touches on the group site kit that chapters and committees can use
  • Launched some websites:
  • Set up Google Analytics on all sites
  • Planned for the future SABR Encyclopedia - working on bringing all of SABR's research into one place. The plan should be published here late next week.
  • Attended the 2009 ASAE Technology Conference, which was very helpful.
  • Got a Windows development environment running at the SABR office for doing work on the baseballindex.org code

Coming up in February:

  • The plan for the Encyclopedia
  • Hopefully at least one more chapter site
  • The Baseball Research Journal archives
  • Screencast documentation for the group site kit

Two new chapter sites
Written by Peter Garver, SABR staff

In the last week, the first two sites at chapters.sabr.org have formally launched.

The Bob Davids Chapter of the Eastern Seaboard (centered around Washington and Baltimore) and the Field of Dreams Chapter of Iowa are now hosted there with new Joomla-based sites.

I appreciate Bruce Brown of the Bob Davids Chapter and Charles Crawley of the Field of Dreams Chapter sticking with me as they helped introduce the first two sites while I was still working out the routine, but I think the end results are very nice.
