SABR 44: Houston convention begins next week!

Before the game, former Houston Astros president and SABR member Tal Smith, a special advisor to the president of the Skeeters, will welcome SABR 44 attendees, along with Ira Liebman, voice of the Skeeters and also a SABR member.

There will be 32 groundbreaking presentations of baseball research — including a study of the Astrodome and its place in popular culture; facial hair and the 1972 World Series; the Retroactive All-Star Game Project; an examination of MLB managers and leadership qualities; an insider’s look at Cuban baseball defectors; an in-depth study of team chemistry in baseball; and the Negro League Houston Eagles.

The Awards Luncheon will include keynote speaker Larry Dierker, along with the presentation of SABR’s highest honor, the Bob Davids Award. As always, there’s the highly competitive and entertaining SABR Trivia Contest finals on Friday night.

SABR 44: RP31 will be “What Options did the Managers Have?” by Bryan Soderholm-Difatte

A late schedule change to announce:

Bryan Soderholm-Difatte will deliver a two-part research presentation, “What Options did the Managers Have?” on Saturday, August 2. Part 1, “Charlie Dressen’s Bad Day at the Office,” will take place in the RP28 timeslot at 12:00-12:25 p.m. in the Legends I/III room on the first floor of the Royal Sonesta Houston. Part 2, “The Brooks Lawrence Affair,” will take place in the RP31 timeslot at 1:00-1:25 p.m. in the Legends IV/VII room.

In this presentation, Soderholm-Difatte explores the context of key decisions by two different managers — Charlie Dressen, in the 1951 playoff game where Bobby Thomson hit his epic home run off Ralph Branca, and Birdie Tebbetts, in the 1956 stretch drive when the Cincinnati Reds were fighting in a three-way race for first place — that may have cost their teams a pennant. Soderholm-Difatte considers the underlying realities about his pitching staff that confronted Dressen down the stretch drive and in the playoff series, which came to a head in that fateful ninth inning. He also discusses, based in part on game logs, whether Tebbets handled Brooks Lawrence exactly as befitting the ace of his staff, or whether the assertion of other researchers that ineffectiveness or even the fact that Lawrence was black may have played a role in Tebbets’s decision making.

Introducing the new Games Project website

We’re pleased to introduce a permanent home for the SABR Baseball Games Project at SABR.org/GamesProject.

Spawned by the popular and successful Baseball Biography Project, the Games Project was launched in January 2014 as a new initiative to research and write articles on major-league and Negro League regular, postseason, and All-Star Games. These game accounts will complement Retrosheet and Baseball-Reference box scores, as well as BioProject essays on the players involved.

The articles are not intended to be mere play-by-play summaries, nor should they be first-person narratives. Rather, the goal is to put each game in historical context — whether that history is of a particular player, team, season, or something even broader.

Articles can cover the range of significance, from Bobby Thomson’s “Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” Jack Morris’s 10 shutout innings in Game Seven or The Sandberg Game, to a regular-season contest where nothing of great consequence occurred, such as Dave Freisleben’s greatest day in baseball or Len Boehmer’s first career hit (a walkoff!)

You can use the new website to search for published SABR game stories by decade or by categories such as Postseason, All-Star Games, No-Hitters, Notable Debuts, and more. Cross-reference searches between select categories are also available. Each game story also includes a link to the box score and play-by-play, when available, from Retrosheet and Baseball-Reference.com.

Questions? Contact Greg Erion for more information about the Games Project, James Forr to request an assignment, or Chip Greene to submit your draft article.

Visit the new Games Project website at SABR.org/GamesProject.

SABR Encyclopedia, Baseball-Reference Bullpen partner to form online baseball repository

The SABR Encyclopedia and the Baseball-Reference.com Bullpen are combining their vast repositories of baseball knowledge under one roof.

Continuing a longstanding partnership, SABR and Sports Reference, LLC, have decided to merge their baseball research wiki sites and organize their collective baseball knowledge online. Thanks to the diligent efforts of Sean Lahman and the community of editors at both sites, SABRpedia entries such as the Spread of Baseball Project and the Collegiate Baseball Database are now available in the same place as the Bullpen’s detailed histories of Negro League teams and minor league players.

The new SABR/Baseball-Reference Encyclopedia can be accessed at SABRpedia.org or Baseball-Reference.com.

“No one has more breadth and depth of baseball knowledge than the members of SABR,” said Sean Forman, President of Sports Reference, LLC. “It’s an honor for Sports Reference to have the chance to work with them in cataloging this knowledge and making it available for the public to use and learn from. The Bullpen already has 70,000 pages and I feel that with SABR and its members’ involvement we are poised to make this the primary repository of baseball knowledge in the world.”

Who can use the SABR/Baseball-Reference Encyclopedia? Anyone. With a little collective effort, the Encyclopedia can become the best place to find information about baseball. All content posted in the Encyclopedia is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, meaning that people using or copying this material must attribute it properly and must share any derivative products with the same license. Want to help out? Read how to contribute.

We welcome input from editors and contributors to the SABRpedia and Bullpen sites, and encourage you to continue advancing our collective knowledge of baseball in the new SABR/Baseball-Reference Encyclopedia. As with all wikis, editors and contributors are the lifeblood of the site, and we look forward to combining the best of both worlds with SABR and Baseball-Reference.com. For more information, please contact Sean Lahman or Jacob Pomrenke.

6 new biographies published by the SABR BioProject

Six new biographies were posted as part of the SABR Baseball Biography Project, which brings us to a total of 2,861 published biographies. Here are the new bios:

All new biographies can be found here: http://sabr.org/bioproj/recent

You can find the SABR BioProject at SABR.org/BioProject.

1947 New York Yankees biographies now posted online: Bridging Two Dynasties: The 1947 New York Yankees, edited by Lyle Spatz and published as part of SABR’s “Memorable Teams” series with the University of Nebraska Press, commemorates this historic club — the players, on the field and off, and the events surrounding their remarkable season. The book features player biographies, including those of future Hall of Famers Yogi Berra and Phil Rizzuto, plus Tommy Henrich, Allie Reynolds, and more, along with a seasonal timeline and pertinent topics such as the winning streak, the Yankees’ involvement in Leo Durocher’s suspension, and the thrilling World Series. The SABR BioProject biographies that appeared in that book can now be read online at: http://sabr.org/category/completed-book-projects/1947-new-york-yankees.

Bios on more than just ballplayers: The ambitious goal of the SABR Baseball Biography Project is to publish a full-life biography of every major league player in history. But SABR members write about a lot more than just ballplayers. In addition, we have pages for Ballparks, Broadcasters, Executives, Managers, Scouts, Spouses, Umpires and a lot more on the BioProject website. You can browse all of these categories at http://sabr.org/bioproj/browse. So if you’ve ever thought, “Hey, that person (or ballpark) should get the full BioProject treatment” — write the story and we’ll publish it!

Get involved! If you’d like to help contribute to the SABR BioProject, visit our BioProject Resources page or read the FAQs section to get started. We’re also looking to expand the BioProject to include all “encyclopedic” articles on baseball-related subjects from past SABR publications or committee newsletters. If you come across an article you think should be included in the SABR “baseball repository” at the BioProject, send a copy or link to markarmour04@gmail.com or jpomrenke@sabr.org.

Joe Garagiola’s baseball life full of achievements and giving

Longtime SABR member Joe Garagiola will be honored Saturday in Cooperstown during the Baseball Hall of Fame’s star-studded Induction Weekend ceremonies. Garagiola was named as the recipient of the 2014 Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s Board of Directors.

The Buck O’Neil Award is presented to an individual for extraordinary efforts to enhance baseball’s positive impact on society. SABR member Roland Hemond, a three-time MLB Executive of the Year and founder of the Arizona Fall League, received the award in 2011. O’Neil, the late Negro Leagues ambassador, was the first recipient of the award in 2008.

As columnist Richard Justice writes at MLB.com, “No one has ever loved his life more than this man. No one has ever loved baseball more. Garagiola is 88 now and moving a bit slower these days. But his spirit remains strong, his sense of humor as sharp as ever. … Garagiola’s wonderful life has been one of humor and giving, of dignity, integrity and grace. Baseball has been a constant — his enduring love. Yet that’s just part of the story. Rather than curse the darkness, he has lit candles, hundreds of them.” Read more about Garagiola’s long, happy baseball life by clicking here.

Garagiola will be honored Saturday, July 26 at Doubleday Field along with J.G. Taylor Spink Award winner Roger Angell, the longetime writer and editor for The New Yorker, and Ford C. Frick Award winner Eric Nadel, broadcaster for the Texas Rangers.

On Sunday, July 27, the illustrious Class of 2014 will get inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame: Atlanta Braves pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, Chicago White Sox first baseman Frank Thomas, and managers Joe Torre, Bobby Cox, and Tony La Russa. If you’re in Cooperstown this weekend, join SABR after the ceremony for the annual Induction Day meeting of the Cliff Kachline Chapter, starting at 6 p.m. at Tillapaugh’s (28 Pioneer Street). All baseball fans are welcome to attend.
