Google search in the Encyclopedia (and more)

We have gone too long without an update on Encyclopedia developments, and many of the ones I'll be mentioning here are months old. But in light of a few recent changes that are slightly more visible, I think it's time for an update. Click "read more" to see what's new...

  • Google Search – For search terms that don't match the Encyclopedia's very large index, the article search is now performed by Google. You see the results, for example, on a search for Utah. Search has also been changed to have only one button, which will usually do what you want it to (two buttons for one thing is confusing).
  • No login to view – You no longer need to login with your SABR account to view the Encyclopedia. You still need to log in to edit, though.
  • Speed – The Encyclopedia has gotten much faster in the past few months, due to a few optimizations and partly to the next item on this list.
  • Improvements in statistics – Statistics display in a more standards-compliant way, and are more accessible for people with very old browsers or screen-reader software.
  • The spread of baseball project – The first all-new research project in the Encyclopedia, you can see it at the Spread of baseball main page.
  • Pop-up help for editing – There are now pop-ups to guide you through some of the tasks involved in editing, such as citing sources. Look for them on the editing page.
  • Image uploading improved – It's easier to specify where an image came from, and why we're allowed to use it. See the help article on uploading images.

There are more changes on the way, and next time I will make sure they show up on this blog sooner!
